Frank Zappa rare promos explained

Frank Zappa Joe's Garage is a three-part rock opera recorded by American musician Frank Zappa in 1979. Originally released as two separate studio albums on Zappa Records, the project was later remastered and reissued as a triple album box set, Joe's Garage, Acts I, II & III, in 1987. The LPs initially received mixed to positive reviews, with critics praising its innovative and original music, but criticizing the scatological, sexual and profane nature of the lyrics. Since its original release, Joe's Garage has been reappraised in a better light by some critics.

I used to work for CBS Records (later to be SONY) in the UK and I must have picked these up along the way. White label albums were pressed in advance of a release to give the artiste, their management and the various music business executives a chance to listen to what the recording sounded like on a vinyl record before the cost of printing sleeves and labels occurred. Some white labels simply come in plain blank card sleeves with nothing on the label. These, at least, have picture covers which give track listings etc.

If you are a completist record collector you would often want all the various aspects of a record release. White labels are a collector's dream.
